Zcash's Hidden Inflation Bug Resurfaces
One of the biggest stories this week was renewed discussion around a critical bug that once threatened Zcash. The vulnerability, known as the "counterfeiting bug," could have allowed an attacker to create unlimited ZEC without detection, potentially undermining the entire network's monetary supply.
What makes the story remarkable isn't that the bug existed, but how it was handled. The issue was discovered privately by Zcash developers, patched before public disclosure, and ultimately exploited by no known attacker. Years later, it remains one of the most significant examples of responsible vulnerability disclosure in blockchain history.
The incident serves as a reminder that strong security isn't about never having bugs. It's about finding them, fixing them, and protecting users before they become disasters.

Q: How do I redeem my NIGHT tokens?
If you participated in the Glacier Drop or Scavenger Mine, you can redeem thawed NIGHT tokens through the official redemption portal. Tokens unlock gradually during the 360-day thawing period, and once unlocked they can be redeemed to your chosen destination address. The redemption period runs through the thawing schedule plus an additional 90-day grace period.
Q: When will NIGHT be transferable?
NIGHT is already transferable on Cardano and can be traded, transferred, and held in supported wallets. Midnight mainnet functionality is also live through supported wallet integrations, allowing users to move and manage their NIGHT across the ecosystem.
Q: How do I claim my rewards?
Your NIGHT allocation unlocks in four separate 25% instalments during the thawing period. Once a portion has thawed, you can redeem it immediately or wait until additional portions unlock and redeem them together. The Redemption Portal displays your available balance and upcoming unlock dates.
Q: What wallet should I use with Midnight?
The most commonly used wallets in the ecosystem are:
Lace offers native Midnight integration and is widely used by Glacier Drop participants, while 1AM is purpose-built specifically for Midnight’s privacy-focused architecture.
Q: Why haven’t I received my tokens yet?
The most common reasons are:
Your allocation has not thawed yet.
You’re checking the wrong destination address.
Your wallet has not fully synchronized.
You haven’t completed the redemption step after claiming.
Remember, claiming your allocation and redeeming your tokens are separate processes. Many users claim successfully but then need to wait for their scheduled unlock date before redemption becomes available.
