So I’ve been researching ZK proofs, decentralized identities (DIDs), reading the Midnight whitepapers, and watching a bunch of videos lately.

In this article, I want to dive into decentralized identity. But before we get there, we need to do a little scene setting.

Privacy Is Not Secrecy

Privacy is frequently conflated with secrecy, but the distinction between the two isn’t just semantic. It’s fundamental.

Secrecy is the act of hiding information to evade accountability. It’s the tool of bad actors, used to obscure illicit activities or dodge the law.

Privacy, on the other hand, is the act of protecting information to ensure security and autonomy.

It’s what allows a business to keep trade secrets from competitors. It’s what allows a company to run payroll without exposing every employee’s salary to the entire office.

As discussed in recent Midnight Summit panels, privacy isn’t about hiding. It’s about preserving the informational advantage that drives markets and protecting the dignity of individuals.

Privacy is normal.

We need to stop viewing it as a gateway to nefarious activity and start viewing it as table stakes for any real-world financial system.

Without privacy, institutions cannot participate.

Without privacy, individuals cannot remain safe.

Enter Midnight: The Era of Rational Privacy

This is where Midnight fundamentally shifts the narrative.

Unlike previous privacy-focused projects that aimed for complete obfuscation, Midnight is built around the concept of Rational Privacy, also known as Selective Disclosure.

Midnight is not designed to help people dodge the law.

It’s designed to help people comply with it without sacrificing their data sovereignty.

Today’s blockchain landscape often forces us to choose between two extremes:

• Total transparency, where everyone sees everything.

• Total anonymity.

Midnight introduces a third option.

Selective disclosure.

Instead of revealing everything, you reveal only what is necessary.

And nowhere is this capability more important than in the realm of decentralized identity.

The Nightclub Example

We’ve all heard the classic decentralized identity analogy.

A girl walks up to enter a nightclub.

How It Works Today

The bouncer needs her to prove she’s over 18 (or maybe 21 in your part of the world).

To prove it, she hands over her driver’s licence.

The problem?

She only needed to prove her age.

Instead, she has now shown a complete stranger her full name, address, date of birth, and potentially other personal information.

Some clubs even scan the ID or take a photo to store that information.

How It Could Work Tomorrow

The bouncer still needs proof of age.

This time, she taps her phone, watch, or wristband against the venue’s verification device.

Her wallet contains a decentralized identity credential.

The screen simply displays:

APPROVED

No name.

No address.

No date of birth.

No unnecessary personal information.

The bouncer learns only one thing:

She is eligible to enter.

Pretty cool, right?

But here’s the thing...

That example wasn’t what blew my mind.

Because every time I heard it, I had the same question.

Who issued that credential in the first place?

And couldn’t they be hacked too?

The Verifiable Credential Model

This is where Midnight’s identity model starts getting interesting.

To begin with, Midnight’s identity framework will leverage Hyperledger Identus (formerly Atala Prism), a system that IOG has already invested significant development effort into.

This is known as the Verifiable Credential Model.

How It Works

You go to a trusted issuer.

This could be:

• Your bank

• A KYC provider

• An exchange like Coinbase

• A government service

They verify your identity once and issue you a digital credential.

From that point forward, the credential lives in your wallet.

Instead of repeatedly uploading passports, licences, selfies, and personal information to every service you use, you simply present proof that a trusted issuer has already verified you.

The model essentially says:

“I trust Coinbase to verify you, and I trust the credential Coinbase signed.”

That’s already a huge improvement over today’s system.

But Couldn’t They Still Be Hacked?

This was still nagging at me.

After all, Coinbase still has your information.

The answer is yes.

They can still be hacked.

But now there is one trusted verifier rather than hundreds.

Today, every exchange, website, platform, and service asks for your personal information and stores a copy of it.

Every one of those databases becomes a target.

With verifiable credentials, your information only needs to exist with the issuer.

Everyone else receives only the proof.

If those other services get hacked, your personal information isn’t sitting there waiting to be stolen.

Better.

But it gets even better.

The Game Changer: zkTLS

This is where things started getting really interesting.

Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of this technology is the potential future integration of zkTLS (Zero-Knowledge Transport Layer Security).

zkTLS acts as a bridge between the existing secure web (Web2) and the private blockchain world (Web3).

Today, proving your identity usually means creating yet another account.

You sign up with an identity provider.

You upload documents.

You take selfies.

You create another database full of sensitive information that could potentially be compromised.

zkTLS changes that model entirely.

Instead of creating a new identity profile, you simply leverage the trusted services you already use every day.

Your bank.

Your exchange.

Your government account.

An Australian Example

Most working-age Australians already have verified accounts through myGov, the ATO, or Centrelink.

With zkTLS, you could potentially log into your existing myGov account.

Midnight could then cryptographically verify a specific fact, such as:

“This user is a valid Australian resident.”

Importantly, the blockchain doesn’t need to see your tax records.

It doesn’t need to see your account details.

It doesn’t need your credentials.

It only verifies the fact being proven.

That’s a huge shift.

The model becomes:

“I trust cryptography to verify that you successfully logged into your account, without requiring the issuer to create a new credential or even know who you’ll share the proof with.”

That excited me.

My mind was partially blown.

But I still had one final question.

Who Gives Issuers Authority?

If my bank can issue credentials...

And Coinbase can issue credentials...

Who says they’re allowed to?

Let’s take a step back.

In today’s world, governments effectively have a monopoly on identity.

If I print a passport at home, it’s fake.

If the government prints it, it’s real.

Why?

Because the law grants the government authority.

Simple.

But blockchain turns that model upside down.

The Midnight Trust Model

In the Midnight world, anyone can become an issuer.

I could launch “Degen ID Corporation” tomorrow and start issuing “Verified Billionaire” credentials to everyone.

The blockchain wouldn’t stop me.

It doesn’t care.

So why doesn’t the system break?

Because the verifier acts as the bouncer.

The verifier maintains a trusted list of acceptable issuers.

A nightclub, exchange, or application might establish a rule that says:

“I will accept an Over 18 credential only if it was signed by one of these approved issuers.”

For example:

• Government Identity Service

• Coinbase Verification

• A regulated KYC provider

If someone presents a credential issued by “Degen ID Corporation,” the system simply checks the signature and responds:

Access Denied. Unknown Issuer.

What Actually Blew My Mind

This is the part that really changed how I think about identity.

In the traditional world, authority is granted from the top down.

In the Midnight world, authority is recognised through trust.

The blockchain doesn’t decide who is trustworthy.

The verifier does.

Issuers earn trust through reputation, compliance, audits, reliability, and real-world credibility.

Government agencies become trusted because they follow strict legal frameworks.

Regulated businesses become trusted because they’ve built reputations over time.

Random issuers are ignored because nobody chooses to trust them.

And that’s what finally blew my mind.

In the old world, authority is assigned.

In the Midnight world, authority is recognised.

It’s the inverse of how we’ve traditionally thought about identity.

And because users share proofs instead of personal information, a hacked verifier has very little to steal.

The user becomes safer.

Not because nobody can be hacked.

But because the valuable data isn’t being sprayed across hundreds of databases anymore.

Final Thoughts

There’s a lot more to this topic than I can cover in a single article.

But the deeper I dive into Midnight, the more I realise it isn’t simply building privacy technology.

It’s rethinking how trust works in a digital world.

The goal isn’t secrecy.

The goal is proving what matters while revealing as little as possible.

And if Midnight succeeds, decentralized identity could end up being one of the most impactful use cases in the entire ecosystem.

Whenever privacy technology comes up… the same question usually follows close behind.

“How can regulators verify anything if the information is fully private?”

It’s a fair question right?

For years, the debate around privacy has been framed as a choice between two extremes. Either everything is visible and easy to verify, or everything is hidden and impossible to trust. This means most people assume that those are just the only options available. But the problem is that neither approach works particularly well.

Complete transparency creates privacy concerns because people end up revealing far more information than necessary. Complete secrecy creates trust issues because nobody can verify what is actually happening. As our lives become increasingly digital, both problems become harder to ignore.

This is where Midnight takes a different approach!

Rather than treating privacy and compliance as opposing forces, Midnight is built around the idea that both can exist within the same system. The goal is not to eliminate accountability or hide information from everyone. The goal is to ensure that people only disclose what is genuinely required and nothing more.

The Problem With Traditional Compliance

Think about how identity verification works today. In many situations, proving a single fact requires exposing a surprising amount of personal information. A venue checking whether you’re old enough to enter often receives your full name, address, date of birth, and licence number, even though none of those details are relevant to the decision being made.

The only question that needs to be answered is simply…

“Is this person old enough?”

Yet traditional systems struggle to separate proof from disclosure. As a result, we regularly hand over entire collections of personal information just to verify one small fact. Most people have become so accustomed to this process that they barely notice it happening. The internet operates in much the same way.

Companies collect entire databases of customer information because current systems are often designed around gathering everything first and deciding what matters later. The more information that is stored, the greater the risk that information will eventually be leaked, stolen, or misused. Privacy becomes an afterthought rather than a design principle.

Midnight’s Different Approach

Midnight approaches the problem from the opposite direction. Instead of asking users to reveal everything upfront, the platform is designed around selective disclosure. This allows people to prove specific facts while keeping unrelated information private.

Imagine proving you meet an age requirement without revealing your exact birthdate. Imagine demonstrating that a compliance check has been completed without exposing every piece of personal information involved in that process.

The verifier still receives the assurance they need.

The user keeps control over their information.

Both sides achieve their goal without unnecessary disclosure.

This is where Midnight’s use of Zero-Knowledge technology becomes particularly important. Rather than exposing underlying data, users can generate proofs that confirm a statement is true while keeping sensitive details private. The result is a system where verification remains possible without requiring complete transparency.

Privacy And Accountability Are Not Opposites

One of the biggest misconceptions about privacy technology is that privacy removes accountability. In reality, privacy and accountability serve different purposes. Accountability ensures that actions can be verified and rules can be enforced. Privacy ensures that people do not surrender more information than necessary during that process.

We already accept this principle in many areas of everyday life. Your doctor can verify your medical history without publishing it online. Your bank can confirm your account exists without sharing your transaction history with strangers. Your employer can verify your qualifications without making your entire personnel file public.

In each case, verification exists alongside privacy. Midnight extends that same principle to blockchain applications. Rather than forcing users to choose between privacy and compliance, it creates mechanisms that allow both to coexist. Information can remain private while specific facts are selectively disclosed when needed.

That distinction may become increasingly important as digital systems continue to expand into every aspect of modern life.

Final Thoughts

The privacy debate is often framed as a battle between transparency and secrecy. Midnight suggests the real goal is neither. Most people do not want a world where everything is hidden.

They also do not want a world where every personal detail is permanently exposed. What they want is something far more reasonable: the ability to prove what matters without revealing everything else.

In many ways, that is what selective disclosure is all about. Not hiding the truth. Not exposing everything. Simply sharing the right information with the right people at the right time.

Most people treat privacy and anonymity as if they mean the same thing. In everyday conversation, the two words get blended together until they feel interchangeable. But they describe completely different ideas.

Understanding that difference matters. Once you separate the two properly, many debates around crypto, digital identity, and online freedom become much easier to understand. The confusion has also created a strange cultural shift where privacy is often treated as suspicious behaviour, while mass data collection somehow became normal. That inversion deserves a closer look.

Privacy Is About Control

Privacy is not about disappearing from society or becoming invisible online. At its core, privacy is about control. It means deciding what information you share, who can access it, and when it should be revealed.

You already practise privacy every single day without thinking about it. You close the bathroom door, use passwords, and lock your phone. You probably do not post your banking history on social media every Friday night either.

None of that makes you anonymous. People still know who you are. Your employer knows your name, your bank knows your account exists, and your friends recognise you instantly.

Privacy simply creates boundaries around information that does not need to be public. That distinction matters because many people now associate privacy with secrecy or criminal intent. In reality, privacy is normal human behaviour, and healthy societies depend on it.

Anonymity Is Different…

Anonymity is about hiding identity itself. If privacy means controlling information, anonymity means removing the connection between actions and the person performing them.

A masked street artist can be anonymous. An anonymous whistle-blower can release documents without revealing their identity. Someone posting online under an alias may also be operating anonymously.

The important distinction is simple. Privacy protects information, while anonymity protects identity. The two ideas can overlap, but they are not the same thing.

You can have privacy without anonymity. You can also have anonymity without much privacy at all. Once separated properly, the difference becomes much easier to understand.

The Internet Accidentally Broke Privacy

The modern internet runs on data collection. Most websites, apps, and platforms gather enormous amounts of information because data became one of the most valuable resources in the digital economy.

Companies track clicks, locations, purchases, browsing habits, behaviour patterns, and personal preferences. Over time, people slowly accepted this as normal. That acceptance quietly reshaped how society thinks about privacy.

The strange part is that society became more comfortable with corporations collecting personal information than with ordinary people wanting privacy in the first place. Somewhere along the way, asking for privacy started sounding suspicious, while surveillance became part of the background scenery.

Today, entire business models depend on learning as much about users as possible. The more information collected, the more predictable behaviour becomes. In many ways, the internet evolved into a giant behavioural prediction machine wearing colourful user interfaces.

Crypto entered that environment with a very different philosophy.

Blockchain Created A New Problem

One of blockchain’s biggest strengths is transparency. Public chains allow anyone to verify transactions independently without trusting a central authority. That openness creates security, auditability, and credibility.

But transparency also introduced a major trade-off. Many blockchain networks expose transaction histories, wallet balances, and activity forever. Even when wallets are pseudonymous, tracking tools can often connect behaviour back to real people over time.

That creates an uncomfortable tension. People want systems that are verifiable and trustworthy, but they also want reasonable control over their personal information. Most users do not actually want every financial interaction permanently visible on a public ledger.

This is where Midnight Network starts becoming quite interesting. They are building systems where privacy can exist alongside verification instead of against it.

Privacy Does Not Mean “Nobody Knows Anything”

This is where many crypto discussions fall apart. When people hear the word “privacy,” they often imagine a completely invisible system where nobody can verify anything and bad actors operate freely in darkness.

That is not what privacy-focused technology is trying to achieve. Modern privacy systems are increasingly built around selective disclosure. Users can reveal specific information while still protecting unnecessary details.

Someone could prove they are old enough to access a service without revealing their exact birthdate. A transaction could be validated without exposing every detail publicly. A user could prove compliance requirements without broadcasting their full identity online.

That is not the same thing as removing accountability from a system. It is about reducing unnecessary exposure while still maintaining verification.

Midnight focuses heavily on this idea because the future of digital systems may depend on balancing transparency with human privacy instead of forcing people to sacrifice one for the other.

Its architecture is designed around a dual public and private state model. Certain information can remain private while proofs and verification data still interact with the blockchain. That balance is becoming increasingly important.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Artificial intelligence, facial recognition, behavioural analytics, and large-scale data collection are expanding rapidly. At the same time, people are uploading more personal information online than ever before.

That combination changes the importance of privacy entirely. Information that once seemed harmless can now be combined, analysed, and interpreted at enormous scale. Small fragments of personal data can build surprisingly detailed pictures of someone’s life, habits, beliefs, and behaviour.

In that environment, privacy becomes less about hiding and more about maintaining healthy boundaries. Most people do not want complete anonymity. They simply want reasonable control over how much of their life becomes permanently visible, searchable, and monetised.

Final Thoughts

The internet spent years collapsing privacy and anonymity into the same conversation, even though they solve very different problems. Privacy is about control, while anonymity is about identity.

Once you separate those ideas, many crypto debates suddenly become easier to understand. Projects like Midnight are not trying to create a lawless invisible internet where nobody can verify anything.

The larger goal is much more practical. Build systems where people can prove, participate, and interact online without exposing every detail about themselves in the process. That future probably sounds a lot more reasonable than most people realise.

The phrase “Zero-Knowledge Proof” sounds like something pulled from a cryptography textbook nobody actually finished reading. Most people hear it once, nod politely, and then quietly avoid asking questions because it feels impossibly technical. But the strange thing is that the core idea behind it is actually very simple.

A Zero-Knowledge Proof allows someone to prove something is true without revealing the information behind it. In other words, you can prove you know the answer without showing the answer itself.

That really sounds impossible at first hey. It feels like proving you own a house key without ever taking the key out of your pocket. Yet that’s exactly what this technology is designed to do, and it’s becoming one of the most important ideas in crypto. The easiest way to understand it is through a normal everyday example.

Imagine you walk up to a nightclub and the security guard asks whether you’re over eighteen. Normally, you would hand over your ID, even though your ID contains far more information than the guard actually needs.

Your licence reveals your full name, your home address, your date of birth, and several other personal details. None of that matters to the person standing at the door. They only need confirmation that you meet the age requirement. A Zero-Knowledge Proof changes that interaction completely.

Instead of exposing all your personal information, your phone could simply confirm that you are over eighteen without revealing anything else. The guard gets the answer they need, while your private information stays private.

That is the entire magic trick. Once you understand that example, the importance of this technology becomes much easier to see because the modern internet has a serious privacy problem.

Every website wants data, Every app collects information, Companies track behavior, purchases, locations, clicks, interests, and habits with incredible precision. Most online services operate on the same basic deal: hand over your information and trust us to protect it later. History suggests that deal rarely ends well.

Databases are constantly getting hacked and the users information gets entirely leaked online. Personal data is bought, sold, packaged, and analysed until privacy slowly disappears in the background like air leaking from a tyre.

Zero-Knowledge technology flips this model upside down because it focuses on proving instead of exposing. Instead of handing over the entire treasure chest, you only provide proof that the treasure exists. The information stays with you.

That matters enormously in crypto because most blockchains are radically transparent by design. While transparency sounds positive at first, it also means transactions, balances, and wallet activity can often be viewed publicly forever.

Imagine if every bank transaction you made could be inspected by strangers at any time. Most people would find that deeply uncomfortable, yet that level of visibility already exists across many blockchain networks today.

Projects like Midnight are exploring how privacy and verification can exist together without sacrificing security. The idea is not to remove trust from blockchain systems but to remove unnecessary exposure. You should be able to prove something without revealing everything about yourself in the process. That single shift changes a lot more than people realize.

It creates the possibility for private payments, confidential identity systems, secure voting applications, protected medical records, and online services that collect dramatically less personal information from users. More importantly, it changes how we think about privacy itself.

People often say privacy only matters if you have something to hide, but that argument falls apart very quickly in the real world. Nobody thinks it is suspicious to lock their front door, use passwords, or close the curtains at night. Privacy is not criminal behavior. It is a normal part of being human.

The internet simply forgot that somewhere along the way. Zero-Knowledge Proofs are exciting because they offer a future where technology can still verify truth without demanding complete transparency from everyone using it. For crypto projects like Midnight, that idea sits at the centre of what comes next.

You do not need to understand advanced mathematics to understand why this matters. The technical side is incredibly complex, but the human side is simple. People want control over their own information. Zero-Knowledge Proofs might become one of the technologies that finally gives some of that control back.

Under the hood, systems like Midnight use advanced forms of Zero-Knowledge technology called zk-SNARKs. The mathematics behind them is incredibly complex, but the goal is simple: prove something is true while revealing as little information as possible.

I finally put on my reading glasses and started reading "Prove Nothing" by Charles Hoskinson, and it completely changed the way I look at privacy.

Honestly, most people think privacy means hiding it all away. But that's really not the case; you see, privacy is 100% about the control you have over what you don't want to disclose.

That’s what makes Midnight so interesting to me. The internet today works in extremes like You either reveal everything or you don’t participate at all. There’s absalutely no middle ground what so ever. That’s where zero-knowledge technology changes everything we know about our privacy.

The idea that you can prove something is true without revealing the actual information sounds insane at first. Like some kind of digital magic trick hidden inside mathematics.

But that’s exactly what Midnight is building towards.

What I like about Proving Nothing is that it doesn’t feel like one of those crypto books trying to sound smarter than you every paragraph. It actually breaks things down in a way normal people can start understanding.

The book goes deep into zero-knowledge proofs, selective disclosure, zk systems, Midnight, and how privacy could completely reshape the way we use blockchain technology moving forward.

And honestly, after reading through parts of it, you start realizing how backward the current internet really is. Like, why should every transaction be public forever? Why should proving something require revealing everything?

That model makes no sense anymore in this day and age. We’re moving into a world where privacy won’t mean disappearing. It’ll mean choosing what becomes visible. That’s why I think projects like Midnight actually matter so much more than ever in these times. Most blockchains rely on a single token to do everything. By everything I mean the token usually secures the network, governs upgrades, rewards validators, and pays transaction fees. That works pretty well but it can also create some crazy friction. When one asset has to wear every hat, speculation can send transaction costs soaring.

Midnight is taking a fully different approach by separating ownership from usage, through a dual-asset model built around NIGHT and DUST. Together, they create an economy designed for privacy, predictability, and long-term sustainability.

NIGHT: The Network Asset

NIGHT is Midnight’s native asset and it represents participation in the network itself.

Holding NIGHT allows you to:

• help secure the network by operating or delegating to block-producing nodes

• participate in governance

• earn rewards from Midnight’s on-chain Reserve

• generate DUST for network transactions

Importantly, NIGHT is never spent when you use the network. Instead, it acts more like productive capital. Hold it, and it continuously grants access to Midnight’s resources. Think of NIGHT as owning a solar panel… You keep the panel, but it generates energy you can use every day.

DUST: The Network Resource

DUST is not a traditional token however, it is a shielded, non-transferable network resource used exclusively to pay transaction fees on Midnight. Whenever you submit a transaction or interact with an application, DUST is consumed.

But unlike a traditional cryptocurrency, DUST cannot be:

• bought or sold

• transferred between users

• held as an investment

It exists for one purpose only and that’s to power activity on the Midnight network. That makes DUST less like money and more like electricity. You use it, and it’s gone.

How DUST Is Generated

DUST is generated automatically by holding NIGHT. Each NIGHT holder can designate any DUST address to receive the DUST their NIGHT generates. That address could belong to them, another person, or even an application. This flexibility enables powerful use cases. For example, an application could receive DUST from a NIGHT holder and use it to sponsor transaction fees for its users, creating a smoother onboarding experience.

Over time, DUST accumulates at that address, up to a maximum determined by the amount of NIGHT held. Once that cap is reached, DUST generation pauses until some of it is spent. The more NIGHT you hold, the more DUST you can generate. This means users do not need to buy a separate fee asset. Simply holding NIGHT provides the resource needed to transact on Midnight.

Why This Design Matters

Midnight’s dual-asset model solves a common blockchain problem. On many networks, rising token prices can make transaction fees painfully expensive. A successful asset can unintentionally price out its own users. Midnight avoids that trap.

Because DUST is generated from NIGHT rather than traded on open markets, transaction costs are insulated from speculative volatility. Users can interact with the network without worrying that a price rally will suddenly make basic actions unaffordable. That’s a huge advantage for real-world adoption.

DUST Is Designed to Be Used

DUST is intentionally not a store of value. It is consumed when used, and if it becomes disconnected from the NIGHT that generated it, such as when that NIGHT is transferred, it decays linearly over time at the same rate it was created until it eventually reaches zero.

It cannot circulate indefinitely, be hoarded, or become a speculative asset. With Dust there is No trading, No stockpiling and No side quests. Its sole purpose is to power transactions.

Why Two Assets Instead of One?

Because specialization works.

• NIGHT secures, governs, and aligns the network

• DUST enables transaction execution

By separating these roles, Midnight creates a cleaner and more efficient economic system. NIGHT captures the long-term value of the network. DUST handles day-to-day network usage.

A Fixed Supply, A Predictable Resource

Another important detail is that the total supply of NIGHT is fixed at 24 billion. All 24 billion NIGHT were created at the outset. However, not all of it entered circulation immediately. A portion is held in Midnight’s on-chain Reserve and released as block rewards once the network reaches the conditions required for distribution.

No new NIGHT will ever be minted, and transactions never consume NIGHT. Because the Reserve is finite, Midnight’s issuance is disinflationary that means new NIGHT enters circulation at a declining rate over time. Eventually, once the Reserve has been fully distributed, block rewards will end and the circulating supply will equal the total supply.

That means NIGHT offers scarcity and predictability, while DUST remains a renewable resource generated by NIGHT holders. It’s a design that balances long-term value with everyday usability.

The Bigger Picture

Midnight’s dual-asset model reflects a simple idea that privacy should be practical. NIGHT gives participants a stake in the network’s future. DUST provides a predictable way to use that network. Together, they balance security, utility, and accessibility, making Midnight easier to use while preserving the privacy at its core. That’s not complexity for complexity’s sake. It’s elegant design, engineered for the real world.

For many people, blockchain architecture feels like opening the back of a watch. Gears spin in every direction, each one essential, yet the whole mechanism can seem impossibly intricate at first glance.

Midnight is no exception. Under the hood, it relies on sophisticated cryptography and an elegantly designed proving system. But the core idea is remarkably simple: keep sensitive data private while still allowing the network to verify that everything is correct.

Most people think privacy is a simple switch. Something is either public or private, visible or hidden, shared or locked away.

That framing feels intuitive, but it breaks down quickly once you look at how information actually behaves in the real world. Privacy isn’t a single decision. It operates in layers, and each layer reveals something different.

Understanding those layers changes how you think about blockchains entirely.

The First Layer: What You Choose to Show

The most obvious layer of privacy is the one we interact with directly. It’s the information you intentionally make visible, whether that’s a transaction, an identity, or a piece of data.

Most public blockchains operate almost entirely at this level. Information is exposed so that it can be verified, and verification is what gives the system its credibility. Private systems attempt to solve this by hiding that information instead, restricting access to a known set of participants.

Both approaches make sense in isolation, but they simplify privacy into an all-or-nothing decision. Either everything is visible, or nothing is. In practice, that’s rarely how things work.

That story sounds reasonable, but it misses something more important. For many businesses, the problem isn’t timing or awareness. It’s that most blockchains, as they exist today, don’t fit how businesses actually operate.

The Transparency Trade-Off

Public blockchains are built around a clear principle: everything should be verifiable. The simplest way to achieve that is to make information visible, so anyone can independently confirm what has happened.
